What is Ulappala?
In Finnish mythology, every animal species has a mythical progenitor known as an emuu—the guardian spirit of its kind, watching over and protecting the life it has brought into the world. The emuu of the dog is called Ulappala.
This beautiful piece of folklore inspired the name Ulappalan, which I chose for my kennel name in 2009, and later for my small creative business, Ulappala Art, founded in 2021.
Dogs have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up with them sparked a lifelong passion that has led me to many years of active involvement in the dog world. Although I have long dreamed of breeding under the Ulappalan name, family life and my career have meant that this dream has remained on hold. I still hope that one day I will welcome the first Ulappalan puppies into the world.
Art has been another constant companion throughout my life. Sometimes it has taken centre stage, sometimes it has quietly waited in the background, but it has always been there. Much of my inspiration comes from dogs—their personalities, their expressions, and the simple, meaningful moments of everyday life shared with them.
Ulappala Art is a small, independent business that I run alongside my regular work. I create at my own pace and add new, ready-made pieces to the shop whenever they are available.
If you have any questions, would like to know more about my work, or simply wish to get in touch, I would be delighted to hear from you.
Best,
Hanna, the artist
